The Journey Toward a Home Gym: Introduction

Aside from running programs and reviewing them for y’all, I figured I’d give you a peak behind the curtain at my journey toward something I’ve wanted for a long time: a home gym.

Technically, I’ve had a home gym since March of 2020 when the COVID pandemic forced all gyms shut and I bought a suspension trainer. But I’ve been dreaming a full rack focused home gym for almost a decade. The space available to me living in one of the most expensive real estate cities in the world held me back for a long while. But with the pandemic, priorities shift and having a bigger place for me and my family started to seem more important than other things. So, you redo the budget and you find a way.

So, we’ll start with an Introduction to this whole project. Here’s a timeline:

2010: Start regularly working out at my apartment building’s gym. Fuckarounditis. Ellipticals and random dumbbell exercises I remember my football coach teaching me.

2015: Get a commercial gym membership and start program lifting. During this time, I definitely start thinking how useful a home gym would be.

2017: Hit the 1,000 lb club. It’s clear that I’m dedicated enough to the gym to go regularly for a couple years. Home gym starts to feel like it would be a great investment, but my condo is only 800 square feet and I have a kid now to share that space.

2020: Commercial gyms are closed up. We’re all forced into whatever home gyms we can find. I scrap…
